Discover how mentorship helped shape Kan Pang’s global career at AtkinsRealis, and why great mentors can transform company culture and careers.

Mentorship is moving to the centre of career discussion. A supportive mentor can do far more than boost skills or tick off goals; they can transform entire career paths, shape organisational loyalty, and help unlock long-term potential. Not many professionals illustrate this better than Kan Pang, Director of Highways, Transportation, and Infrastructure at AtkinsRéalis. Kan's career offers an inspiring look at how mentorship can influence not just an individual, but also company culture and performance.

How mentorship changes careers: Kan Pang’s Story

Understanding the power of mentorship

Mentorship is often defined as a relationship in which an experienced individual offers guidance and support to a less experienced colleague, helping them grow both personally and professionally. However, in competitive industries where talent is mobile and commitment can be fragile, mentorship is becoming much more than an HR tool. Companies increasingly seek to craft supportive cultures that encourage both high performance and a sense of community, with mentorship at the foundation.

Kan Pang's story makes it clear that mentorship is a strategic advantage for those who seek growth and for companies that value people. Whether you're at the start of your career or seeking to renew your commitment, mentorship delivers value at every level.

Mentorship with Douglas Simmons

When reflecting on what kept him anchored at AtkinsRéalis for nearly two decades, Kan is quick to highlight one person above all others. Douglas Simmons, his line manager and mentor for most of his tenure, helped shape not only Kan's career but also his approach to leadership and personal development.

Douglas embodied the qualities of an outstanding mentor. He offered frank, honest advice and always made the effort to understand individual circumstances, allowing him to provide specific, actionable guidance. This personalised approach went beyond professional advice, building strong, trusted relationships. Kan explains, "Douglas was a great mentor both professionally and personally, providing leadership vision in challenging times. Mentorship became not just about career progress, but 'all level comforting' where personal relationships develop and commitment to the company is strengthened."

The loss of Douglas in February 2025 was deeply felt, but his influence lives on in the professional and supportive culture Kan now champions within his own teams.

Building deeper connections through mentorship

Mentorship at its best creates a safe, encouraging environment. This deeper connection builds trust, inspires commitment, and gives employees a reason to stay loyal even when challenges arise.

A strong mentor can help identify and nurture individual potential, accelerating both career and personal growth. Kan notes, "Someone who is willing to share their career path and personal experiences with you is a great comfort... how I treat my own colleagues, make strong relationships with key team members, especially when working under pressure is the norm."

Mentorship also encourages reflection, helping mentees focus on priorities and make impactful contributions. Kan credits his own mentorship experience through his counsel with Douglas, which was rooted through real life experiences, highlighting the personalized approach that showcases the depth of care through good mentors.

How mentorship build company culture

Mentorship doesn't only benefit individuals; it helps build resilient, loyal teams and a culture of professional development across the organisation. Kan emphasises that high-quality mentorship requires quality time, tailor-made sessions, where mentors listen deeply and offer bespoke advice.

This investment pays off for companies as well. Through identifying high-potential employees and accelerating their development, organisations can advance their future leaders while strengthening company loyalty and reducing turnover. Kan notes that even informal mentorship, such as regular progress discussions, triggers positive cultural shifts by focusing on what matters most for both individuals and the business.

Taking the next step: Explore careers with impact

Kan Pang's story makes it clear that mentorship is a strategic advantage for those who seek growth and for companies that value people. Whether you're at the start of your career or seeking to renew your commitment, mentorship delivers value at every level.
