My early career in the heart of the nuclear renaissance: Chinmay’s journey at AtkinsRéalis

From campus to clean energy innovation — Chinmay’s story captures what it means to start your career at AtkinsRéalis. As a young engineer, he’s helping shape the future of nuclear technology through curiosity, collaboration, and purpose-driven work.

Like many graduates stepping into their first job, Chinmay was searching for more than just a role, he wanted a place where his ideas could take shape, and his learning could never stop. Joining AtkinsRéalis through campus placement in 2022 gave him exactly that.

From discovering his passion for nuclear engineering to contributing to global projects shaping the future of clean energy, Chinmay’s journey has been one of curiosity, collaboration, and growth.

Read his story in his own words

The beginning

My journey with AtkinsRéalis began in August 2022 through campus placement. Fresh out of college, I was eager to find a place that valued innovation, learning, and global exposure and AtkinsRéalis checked every box.

I didn’t initially know I’d be joining the nuclear business, but the scale and purpose of our work drew me in. Solving complex engineering challenges for clients across the world felt both exciting and meaningful. When I learned I’d be working in the nuclear domain, I was beyond thrilled, especially given our contribution to projects across Europe and our role in shaping the future of clean energy.

Looking back, that leap of faith has defined my career in ways I never imagined.

Learning and discovery

The past few years have been full of learning and exploration. With guidance from my line manager, Jyotsna Mishra, and a team that constantly encourages growth, I’ve built strong process engineering skills and cross-disciplinary knowledge.

I’ve contributed to projects like the world’s first isotope separation project, and the fuel cycle system for the UK’s fusion reactor, representing the future of fusion energy. These projects exposed me to cryogenics, vacuum technology, and radiation safety — areas I never thought I’d explore so early in my career.

I also co-developed a pressure relief device sizing tool for a pharmaceutical company project, helping deliver 200+ quality deliverables efficiently. AtkinsRéalis’ focus on upskilling helped me strengthen my expertise in Aspen HYSYS, UniSim, HTRI, and key industry standards like API 521/520/2000/650.

As part of the India Graduate Development Programme (IGDP), I visited the Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant and NMMP Water Treatment Plant, which deepened my understanding of plant design.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that great engineering isn’t just technical — it’s about collaboration, communication, and delivering quality with purpose.

Moments of impact

A defining moment for me was contributing to the abstract “Progressive Engineering for Tritium Handling Facilities,” which was selected among the top 200 submissions at the Global Tritium Conference 2025. Seeing our work gain international recognition was incredibly rewarding.

Another milestone was leading the Excellence Awards 2024 campaign for the nuclear-process team — from drafting nominations to co-presenting leadership. Being trusted with such responsibility early in my career showed how much confidence my team has in me.

Beyond projects, I lead the Early Careers community in Mumbai, creating opportunities for young professionals to connect and grow through initiatives like interview series, debate competitions, and engagement events. I’m also part of the C2H Mumbai group, one of our vibrant employee resource groups (ERGs) that celebrates creativity at work and fosters a culture of innovation and expression.

Support and guidance

I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who guide, support, and challenge me to do better. My line manager has been a constant source of encouragement, creating space to discuss not just work but personal growth as well.

What I admire most about AtkinsRéalis is the approachability of our leadership. Whether it’s a Business Director or even the CEO, you can have an open, honest conversation. That kind of culture builds trust and belonging.

Life beyond work

Outside work, I find joy in cooking and sports. Cooking helps me unwind and be creative, while cricket keeps me active. Recently, I’ve developed a fascination for Formula 1 — the precision, teamwork, and engineering behind it inspire me.

I also enjoy sharing knowledge — through discussions or guest lectures at my old tuition classes. Passion projects and community work keep me energized and curious, helping me stay balanced.

My advice

If I were to give one piece of advice to someone just starting at AtkinsRéalis, it would be this: “People make all the difference”. If you’re genuinely committed to your own growth, you’ll always find others here willing to help, guide, and support you. This company gives you space to dream big but also provides the ecosystem to make those dreams real.

For me, it’s more than a workplace — it’s where my passion for engineering meets purpose. And as someone who believes fusion is the future, being here feels like contributing to something truly revolutionary.

At AtkinsRéalis, we empower bright minds to innovate, collaborate, and shape a cleaner, smarter world.

If you’re ready to grow your career where curiosity drives progress, explore opportunities with us today.
