How I landed a graduate engineering secondment in sustainable design

Hi, I'm Marcus, an Assistant Structural Engineer in the London Building Structures team. My role involves tackling diverse structural engineering challenges, from conceptual design to project execution. I thrive on applying innovative solutions to complex engineering problems, ensuring structural integrity and sustainability in our projects.

What has been your favorite experience so far?

The graduate scheme provided me with the opportunity to work on projects of various scales, from local infrastructure developments to nuclear power stations, in a range of sectors, from residential to defense . A highlight was my seven-month secondment with the Research & Innovation team in 2023, where I embraced digital tools for structural engineering challenges. This experience enhanced my understanding of design research and digital development, leading to innovative solutions like using unfired clay bricks to reduce carbon and developing new structural design tools.

What is the best thing about working for AtkinsRéalis , operating as AtkinsRéalis?

Joining AtkinsRéalis full-time on the Graduate Development Programme was an easy decision for me, as throughout my prior experiences, I'd seen exemplary work being completed on some of the UK's big infrastructure projects.

What is your top tip for new graduates?

The best advice I was given was to say “yes” to opportunities presented to you—all experiences provide learning opportunities! This also exposes you to a range of projects and allows you to find your preferences.

How has your graduate role at AtkinsRéalis helped you grow?

The challenges I've taken on during my early career, including the unique opportunity to be an ICE President's Future Leader , have allowed me to rapidly develop both personally and professionally. I've been supported along the way by a fantastic network of people.

How has the environment at AtkinsRéalis affected your graduate experience?

My managers, mentors, and colleagues have all played their part in supporting me through the early part of my career. From nuclear power stations to graduate ski trips, the graduate experience has been incredibly varied and gone by very quickly. The environment challenges you to continuously grow and strive for excellence.
