Join me as I share my journey from Degree Apprentice to Graduate Quantity Surveyor at AtkinsRéalis — and show how an apprenticeship can build real skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose

I am Jaida, a Graduate Quantity Surveyor based in Birmingham. I joined AtkinsRéalis in 2021 as a Degree Apprentice and today I work as an Assistant Programme and Commercial Manager on one of the largest rail programmes in the United Kingdom.

For National Apprenticeship Week, I want to share my journey. My apprenticeship was not a second choice. It became the foundation of a career that has grown faster and further than I expected. I completed a recognised degree while gaining four years of hands on experience. This combination gave me knowledge and confidence that a traditional route could not offer in the same way.

From the first day, I was contributing to real work and learning from the people around me. My apprenticeship helped me build momentum that shaped my career from the start.

My growth from apprentice to managing significant work

When I joined AtkinsRéalis, I did not have a fixed plan. I wanted to learn, explore and understand where I could make an impact. Over time, I found a direction that suited me.

My early experience took place in Project Support Office roles across several frameworks. These roles taught me the foundations of delivery, including reporting, governance, finances and coordination. Everything I studied at university felt more relevant because I saw it in practice on live projects.

As I progressed, I joined the RSIP Key Account team, which is the Rail Systems Integration Partner for the East Coast Digital Programme. This was my first experience of a major national rail programme. I saw how large‑scale, complex programmes operate and how every part connects.

My responsibilities grew naturally as my confidence developed. I progressed into combined roles as an Assistant Programme Manager and Assistant Commercial Manager. I now also manage three commissions as a Project Manager. I support the delivery of a multimillion pound portfolio and contribute to the programme’s commercial and programme management needs. This responsibility is something I never imagined when I first joined as an apprentice.

Making an impact on a nationally important rail programme

Most of my work now sits within the East Coast Digital Programme. The programme is transforming one of the country’s most important rail routes through digital signalling.
A typical day involves tasks such as managing change control, working with subcontractors, preparing Applications for Payment, supporting forecasting, reviewing risks and contributing to reporting. The work is detailed and requires accuracy and communication.

Although the tasks can be technical, the impact is clear. Digital signalling has the potential to increase capacity, reduce delays, improve reliability and create a safer railway. Knowing that my work contributes to long term improvements across the network is incredibly rewarding.

Skills that will shape my future

My apprenticeship helped me gain experience that goes far beyond technical knowledge. I achieved the APM Project Management Qualification, but the most meaningful development came from working in real environments.

I learned patience, especially when decisions take time or priorities shift. I developed communication skills that help me speak confidently in meetings, collaborate with engineers and suppliers and share information clearly. Balancing work with university deadlines helped me build strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise effectively.

Most importantly, I gained confidence. Being trusted with real responsibility helped me believe in my abilities and contribute more actively. These skills will travel with me wherever my career goes.

A culture of support and opportunity

My development has been shaped by a culture that values apprentices and invests in their progress. I have had mentors and managers who make time for questions, challenge my thinking and encourage me to step into new responsibilities.

Flexibility has also played a key role. I have always felt trusted to manage my workload in a way that supports my learning and wellbeing. This balance helped me complete my studies, progress professionally and stay healthy.

I have also had opportunities outside my day to day role. These include attending Big Bang 2024, speaking at the What’s Next event in London, supporting events within the East Coast Digital Programme and preparing to attend the Alpine F1 and AtkinsRéalis Apprentice Event. These experiences broadened my understanding of the industry and strengthened my sense of belonging.

Life beyond work and the importance of wellbeing

Outside of work, I volunteer with Lupus UK Youth. I was diagnosed with Lupus in 2023, a long term autoimmune condition. It was a challenging time, but it encouraged me to connect with others who understood the experience. Now I support fundraising and community initiatives that help young people living with the condition.

The understanding and flexibility I receive at AtkinsRéalis makes it easier to balance my health, my volunteering and my career. I am recognised as a whole person, not just a job title.

There is no single type of apprentice

My journey shows that there is no standard apprentice. I am a former degree apprentice who is now a graduate. I support significant projects. I volunteer. I manage my health. Through all of this, I have been supported to grow and explore.

You do not need to know exactly what you want when you begin. AtkinsRéalis helps you explore different areas and discover your strengths. My apprenticeship opened more doors than I expected. I found a passion for programme and commercial management and for contributing to work that benefits the country.

Imagine your own journey

If you are considering an apprenticeship, my message is simple. Do not underestimate this route. You can earn a recognised degree, build real experience, gain responsibility early and shape a meaningful career.

I began without a fixed destination. Today, I am a Graduate Quantity Surveyor and Assistant Programme and Commercial Manager working on a nationally significant programme. I am only at the beginning of my journey.
