Fire and Life Safety Engineer - Railway Systems

Our participation in the Alto high-speed rail project, connecting Québec City to Toronto, as an experienced partner within the Cadence consortium is a key example of this. We are actively working on several other major Canadian Rail projects and have several other projects at the proposal stage or awaiting award.

Our Rail, Transit Systems and Telecommunications (RTST) team deliver system solutions which include civil infrastructure, alignment and track, traction power and distribution, signalling and train control, and communications. As part of this team the Fire and Life Safety Engineer - Railway Systems will perform a critical role in the design and planning phases of a major rail infrastructure project, ensuringe Fire and Life Safety (FLS) systems are seamlessly integrated in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and best practices. This role involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary experts to help design the next generation of safe, resilient, and sustainable transportation systems.

This position may be based in our Montréal, Ottawa, or Toronto office. Occasional travel may be required.

Your role

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to align Fire and Life Safety (FLS) objectives throughout design workshops and review cycles.

  • Develop and implement integrated FLS strategies that ensure system performance, regulatory compliance, and seamless interdisciplinary coordination.

  • Embed FLS requirements early in the design process by reviewing engineering and architectural plans and guiding multidisciplinary contributors.

  • Interpret and apply codes, standards, and regulations (NFPA, CAN/ULC, building codes, transit-specific requirements) while liaising with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).

  • Conduct fire risk assessments for rail stations, tunnels, maintenance facilities, and related infrastructure, recommending effective mitigation strategies.

  • Prepare strategic reports, compliance matrices, and design review documentation to support key project decisions.

  • Support the evolution of internal FLS expertise by mentoring colleagues and contributing to long-term discipline development.

About you

  • Hold a bachelor's degree in engineering, building sciences, or a related technical discipline with specialization in fire protection.

  • Hold a relevant professional certification such as CFPS, OIQ, NFPA Fire Plans Examiner, or equivalent.

  • Bring at least 10 years of experience in Fire and Life Safety systems design for infrastructure or transit projects.

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of Canadian and international fire-protection codes and standards, including NFPA 130.

  • Be proficient in French and English, both spoken and written.*

Expected compensation for this role is between $117,200 – $161,200 annually (Only Applicable to Ontario). Base salaries are determined according to several parameters like skills, experience, and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into account in our offers.

*This position requires knowledge of a language other than French, namely English, as it involves collaboration with members of the Canadian or global leadership team located outside Québec.
