The water sector

Water is our planet’s most precious resource, and we are here to safeguard it. Working alongside the leading water companies, regulators, and water and wastewater utilities clients, we take a data-driven and innovative approach - you could support specific project stages or help manage the entire lifecycle. You'll take on complex challenges, spanning water and wastewater utilities and treatments, to environment protection, regulation and resilience. Whether restoring lakes, rivers, wetlands and habitats, or delivering desalination and pollution control solutions, your expertise will help build more resilient, prosperous and safe communities.

Our Teams - where you could be working

Join our supportive team, where you'll be immersed in designing and managing various water infrastructures, from rivers and ports to complex dam projects. Be a part of transformative environmental projects, designing new reservoirs, restoring rivers, and mitigating flood risks. Beyond engineering, we're reviving lost wildlife in the UK, rejuvenating habitats and protecting endangered species.

Join our team, where you'll gain experience in network and drainage solutions that keep communities safe and allow them to thrive. Harness cutting‑edge digital tools to help our clients understand and manage their assets across their lifecycles – improving operations' performance and making them last longer.

Join the team that bridges the gap between people and water. We collaborate with clients to pioneer innovative research and advice. Using data analytics, we deliver sustainable solutions resilient to our everchanging world. We're champions for nature‑based solutions across the UK's water sector, advocating for low‑carbon strategies that curb climate change and promote environmental health.

Join our Mechanical, Electrical & Process (MEP) Engineering team and gain experience in leading‑edge design and project delivery. You'll work alongside colleagues who use BIM and digital twins to revolutionize client experiences, optimize costs, and enhance every aspect of MEP systems.

Our civil engineering teams work together to create all kinds of infrastructure, from smart cities and large‑site developments, nuclear power stations and dockyards, to water and wastewater treatment works, pipelines and water networks. Our people plan, design, and oversee construction on projects of all sizes large and small, in the UK and internationally. We enjoy a variety of work, collaborating with clients across sectors including energy, water, cities and development, aviation, and defence, to deliver high‑quality, sustainable, and innovative solutions.

Joining our team, you might help to tackle pollution with innovative wastewater treatment and sustainable drainage systems, design residential and commercial urban development schemes, coordinate complex utility routing and functional road networks, or deliver essential drinking water systems to communities – all making a positive impact to people’s lives.

Our projects

Some of our projects in the Water sector.
Havant Thicket Reservoir

Havant Thicket Reservoir

Havant Thicket Reservoir is a major water resilience project designed to help secure future water supply while creating wider environmental and community value. Developing the UK’s first major surface water reservoir in 30 years required navigating complex technical, environmental and regulatory challenges. We prepared high quality planning applications and led comprehensive stakeholder engagement, securing planning permissions first time without post submission design changes.

By establishing an agreed planning strategy at the outset, we reduced risk early, identified potential design issues before they became bigger problems, and supported proactive engagement with stakeholders and the local community. As a result, we were delighted to be awarded the CIEEM Best Practice Award for Stakeholder Engagement, reflecting the project's exceptional inclusivity and collaboration with local communities and environmental groups.

The team also addressed complex environmental issues, including mitigation for the loss of ancient woodland, geotechnical and geoenvironmental risks, and compliance with the Water Framework Directive, with no objections from statutory environmental bodies. The result reflects the strength of multidisciplinary collaboration and a balanced approach to water infrastructure, biodiversity, and community benefit.

Spains Hall Estate Beaver Reintroduction project

Spains Hall Estate Beaver Reintroduction project

This pioneering nature based solution helps mitigate flooding in Finchingfield, a historic village in northwest Essex. Working with Spains Hall Estate, the Environment Agency, and King’s College London, AtkinsRéalis supported a project that reintroduced beavers to a woodland stream for the first time in over 400 years in East Anglia.

The beavers have since transformed water movement across the estate, with dams creating ponds that store significant volumes of water and slow downstream flow during heavy rainfall.

Our role included advanced hydrological and ecological modeling to understand the wider effects of beaver activity and to help shape a Whole Farm Reservoir approach that identified where water could be stored naturally across the estate. We also created an animation to support stakeholder engagement and illustrate how the landscape and hydrology changed over time. Combined with drone survey data gathered by King’s College London, the project is building valuable evidence for long term flood resilience, biodiversity gain, and the wider application of nature based solutions.

Cardiff Canal Quarter

Cardiff Canal Quarter

Cardiff Canal Quarter reconnects city, water, and community through a regeneration project that brings environmental performance and public value together. Featuring sustainable drainage solutions, climate resilient planting and floating wetlands to reduce both flooding and energy demands for water treatment; we took key decisions governed by a commitment to reducing carbon and waste.

The scheme aligns with the Well being of Future Generations Act 2015 in Wales, demonstrating how environmental design can support long term social and ecological benefits as part of wider city regeneration.

"At AtkinsRéalis, the supportive environment of colleagues, line managers, and senior management has significantly enabled my professional growth.”

- Caleb, Graduate Consultant.
