Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Lead Instrumentation Designer to join our Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Mumbai.

The Lead Instrumentation Designer, with extensive expertise in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D, and SmartPlant Instrumentation, is responsible for providing technical leadership and overall design execution of complex instrumentation and automation engineering packages for Industrial Plants, Mining, Minerals & Metals, Chemical and Petrochemical facilities, Conventional & Renewable Power plants, and Nuclear facilities. The role involves leading, coordinating, reviewing, and approving advanced 2D and 3D design deliverables, including control system architectures, instrumentation layouts, loop and hook‑up drawings, wiring diagrams, JB/PLC interfaces, cable and conduit layouts, and control room and analyzer room layouts, ensuring full alignment with P&IDs, instrument indices, I/O lists, design bases, and vendor documentation. The Lead Instrumentation Designer is accountable for Navisworks model review and 3D model coordination, including resolution of model issues and effective coordination across engineering disciplines and project stakeholders. In addition, the role includes interfacing with project managers and lead engineers, mentoring and guiding designers, allocating and monitoring work, and ensuring consistent application of client specifications, international codes and standards, and stringent quality and safety requirements.

Job Summary

The Lead Instrumentation & Automation Designer is responsible for leading, coordinating, and delivering high-quality instrumentation and automation design deliverables for projects across all phases. The role involves technical leadership, checking and approval of drawings, mentoring junior designers, and ensuring compliance with project specifications, applicable standards, and client requirements.

Your role

  • Develop Level 1 and Level 2 Automation System Architectures.
  • Prepare and review networking diagrams and control room building layouts, including equipment allocation.
  • Lead the development of all I&C related engineering drawings based on:
  • Design Basis / Design Criteria documents
  • Scope of Work (SOW)
  • Vendor drawings, sketches, and engineering notes
  • Deliverables include, but are not limited to:
    • Cable tray and duct routing drawings
    • Instrument wiring layout drawings
    • Wiring and loop diagrams
    • Instrument, junction box (JB), panel, and telecom system location plans
    • Instrument installation and hook-up drawings with MTO
    • Junction box details
    • Interface and I&A markings on P&ID diagrams
    • Telecom system schematics (CCTV, PA, Telephone, LAN, ACS, etc.)
    • Telecom allocation plans and cable tray layouts
  • Prepare and verify:
  • Cable lists with routing and length details
  • Junction Box schedules
  • Instrument and cable gland schedules
  • Generate Material Take-Offs (MTOs) for bulk commodities based on approved engineering documents.
  • Develop instrument installation standard details and maintain project documentation.
  • Perform and validate As-Built drawings based on site-marked redline documents.
  • Prepare and manage interface isometric drawings for instrumentation and automation systems.
  • Perform drafting and design work using AutoCAD 2D (mandatory)
  • Apply working knowledge of AutoCAD 3D / Plant 3D / SP3D as per project requirements.
  • Place instrumentation items into plant-wide 3D models to verify:
  • Correct equipment location
  • Interference and clash detection
  • Check vendor drawings and multidisciplinary drawings for technical correctness and interface consistency.
  • Coordinate with process, piping, electrical, telecom, and civil disciplines.
  • Provide clear interface requirements related to:
  • Equipment spacing
  • Instrument and cable numbering
  • Control philosophy
  • Flow element and installation requirements
  • Lead and guide junior and intermediate designers across all I&A deliverables.
  • Review and check drawings and documents prepared by team members.
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Project standards
    • Company drafting standards
    • Client specifications and document control procedures
  • Support engineering teams by accurately interpreting:
  • Instrument lists
  • I/O lists
  • Cable schedules
  • Instrument datasheets
  • P&IDs

About you

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Instrumentation & Automation from a recognized technical institute is preferred.
  • Candidates from related engineering disciplines may be considered if experience criteria are met.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of experience as an Instrumentation & Controls Designer, including experience in a Senior or Lead role.
  • Proven experience delivering I&C design for industrial projects.

Technical Competencies

  • Strong understanding of:
  • Instrument types and installation practices
  • Automation systems and control concepts
  • Drafting symbols and I&C design standards
  • Excellent working knowledge of:
    • AutoCAD (mandatory)
    • Microsoft Office tools
  • Strong documentation and document control awareness.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and lead design teams under project deadlines.

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication and stakeholder coordination capabilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail and design accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver within schedule.
