How apprenticeships foster social connections

What's the first thing that springs to mind when you think of an apprenticeship? Maybe it's hands‑on learning or professional development. What about establishing friendships and professional relationships?

Apprenticeships are more than just learning opportunities; they also provide invaluable social connections. These connections foster a sense of community and support, offering apprentices the chance to network, collaborate, and learn from others' experiences.

Through shared challenges and achievements, apprenticeships become not just educational journeys but also pathways to lifelong friendships and professional networks.

What will my social life look like as an apprentice?

When you start your apprenticeship journey, you become a part of a vibrant community. This includes fellow apprentices, other early career professionals, managers, mentors, and the learning and development (L&D) team.

All those connections sound great, but perhaps you're still wondering, 'Do apprentices have a social life if they choose to?' The answer is a resounding yes.

Many of our apprentices find that our programmes give them a taste of the typical university experience. Some spend their study days on university campuses and get involved in societies and annual trips. Some even choose to live with other young professionals during their apprenticeship, gaining the all‑important experience of living independently whilst earning a salary.

Now, let's take a closer look at how you'll build these social connections during your apprenticeship.

Peer support

Being part of a supportive culture means more than just having resources at your disposal; it means having a community that genuinely cares about your growth and success.

Many companies, like AtkinsRéalis, will offer an early career forum where you can connect with other apprentices. Here, you can develop your confidence and teamwork skills. You might even pick up some valuable insights from people completing further professional qualifications.

And don't forget, you'll also have line managers and mentors to lean on for support.

Work with leading experts

No matter which apprenticeship you choose, you'll collaborate with top experts spanning various disciplines, offering a unique spectrum of expertise and backgrounds.

In these diverse learning environments, you'll have the chance to network and enhance your communication and interpersonal skills, all while fostering valuable relationships with esteemed clients.

Take part in social activities and events

Beyond university societies, apprentices often have the opportunity to establish social groups within their organizations. Whether it's an LGBTQ+ society, a sailing club, or a reading group, there's something for everyone. And if the idea hasn't been explored yet, why not initiate your own group and unite like‑minded individuals?

These groups not only promote a sense of belonging and inclusivity, but they encourage teamwork skills.

Hear from our apprentices

Explore the social perks of being an apprentice as shared by our AtkinsRéalis team members.

Charlie - Architectural Assistant

I've also enjoyed the social groups across the company, which cultivate a strong sense of community. One of my favorite events was the annual ski trip... I met apprentices and graduates at AtkinsRéalis from offices I wouldn't usually have contact with.

Louise - Quantity Surveying Apprentice

It sounds cliche but working as part of a team to achieve something together is quite inspiring. I'm motivated by watching a project progress over time, as all the different roles overcome challenges together to achieve the client's brief. I also enjoy building a rapport with everyone on the project team.

Rowena - Apprentice Consultant

"The beauty of an apprenticeship programme is that it's a culmination of many different ages, backgrounds and experiences, which creates a diverse group of young professionals ready to learn more and teach their peers and seniors."

Your future starts here

Join an AtkinsRéalis apprenticeship and unlock boundless opportunities. Not only will you gain valuable 'on the job' experience and work towards professional qualifications but you'll also make meaningful connections.

Nothing makes us prouder than to hear that our apprentices have found a place where they can thrive, be themselves, and evolve into the professionals they aspire to be. And we're always looking to welcome individuals who will fuel our drive to push boundaries and engineer a better future.
