How to transfer your skills into a career in the nuclear energy and power sector

My name is Kamal. I was born in Lebanon, where I also attended school (below is a beautiful picture of Lebanon). I completed my university days in Lebanon, Texas and London. I'm a Structural Engineer and Programme Consultant with over 20 years of infrastructure advisory and management experience across major civil, rail, highways, and aviation programmes. After joining the Complex Infrastructure Programme Advisory Practice, part of our Projects and Programme Services team, in 2023, I was keen to explore new opportunities within the organization. By networking internally, my strengths and experience were quickly identified as the right fit for the Sizewell C programme. Now, as Programme Management Office (PMO) team lead, I play a key role in supporting the delivery of designs for this significant nuclear infrastructure project. Nuclear Careers: How to Apply Your Transferable Skills

What skills do you need to work in nuclear?

Transitioning into a new sector meant upskilling quickly. Managing the vast amount of programme data and information in nuclear projects required me to develop new technical skills, including complex Excel functions, Power Query, and Power BI. I've also learned the importance of installing gateways to ensure the integrity and accuracy of data as it moves through multiple reporting tools to the client.

But beyond technical expertise, I've also experienced first-hand how programme management, leadership, and stakeholder engagement are just as critical to delivering nuclear projects successfully—skills that many professionals already have, even if they haven't worked in nuclear before. Learn how we remove barriers for diverse talent.

Nuclear Careers: How to Apply Your Transferable Skills

How can I transfer my skills into a nuclear career?

If you're interested in transitioning into nuclear, focus on your transferable skills. Many of the capabilities gained in infrastructure, transportation, or other large-scale programmes—such as governance, risk management, cost optimization, and stakeholder engagement—are highly relevant.

It's also worth taking some time to understand the nuclear sector and what makes it unique. There are key differences from other industries, but with an open mindset and willingness to learn, it's an exciting and rewarding field to step into. Read how we support women employees to thrive.
