Nancy's journey as an EIT Process Engineer at AtkinsRéalis

When I started university, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do—but I knew one thing for sure: I was passionate about science. That passion took me from Strasbourg, France, all the way to Montréal, Canada, where I am now a process engineering specialist at AtkinsRéalis, working in the Process and Automation team for the industrial sector.

My journey to this role started with getting involved as an AtkinsRéalis campus ambassador and later, gaining an engineering internship and an engineer‑in‑training (EIT) role.

Today, I help design the transformation plants of tomorrow. Whether it’s for food, energy, or advanced technology, I work closely with clients to develop processing systems that truly make a difference. My days are never the same—and that’s precisely what fuels my passion for the job.

AtkinsRéalis campus ambassador role leads to transformative engineering internships

After two years in medical school in France, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. I took some time to reflect, and that’s when I made a big decision: to start over abroad and study engineering in Canada. Of course, the pandemic had other plans! I began my chemical engineering degree at Polytechnique Montréal remotely from France. But by November 2020, I finally set foot in snowy Montreal to start this exciting new chapter for real.

Those five years of study were filled with challenges and growth—from co‑op internships with top food and consumer health brands to a research placement in metabolic engineering, which led to a published scientific paper. I also got involved in student groups like PolyElles and the Comité des Étudiants en Génie Chimique (CEGCh) and eventually became a campus ambassador for AtkinsRéalis.

But the most transformative experience? I completed my internship at AtkinsRéalis in summer 2024. When my supervisor, Nellie, asked if I’d like to return as an engineer‑in‑training the following year, I didn’t hesitate for a second.

I feel incredibly lucky to have joined such a dynamic and supportive team. Whether it’s technical discussions, career guidance, or just chatting about weekend plans, there’s always someone to learn from. The peer learning culture here is real.

Another thing I truly enjoy is the diversity of work environments. One day I’m at the office, the next I’m on a client site, and then working remotely the day after that. Each space brings something unique: at the office, I love meeting new people and learning about different projects. On‑site, we work in “project villages” where I can see real‑time progress and do inspections. No two days are ever the same—and I thrive in that kind of setting.

Life as a process engineer at AtkinsRéalis: Something new every day

Because of the variety in our workspaces, every day brings something new! That said, I’ve established a routine to manage a fast‑paced environment, starting with reviewing emails and setting my daily priorities. Then come the meetings—some technical, some project‑based. And if I’m on site, you’ll find me in full PPE: hard hat, boots, gloves, safety glasses, and a high‑vis harness, heading out to the construction zone.

A sweet project that’s sticking with me

Right now, I’m working on the expansion of a sugar refinery in the Montreal area. Our process engineering team is handling the design of new equipment, piping systems, and instrumentation that turns raw sugar (delivered by boat!) into the white sugar we use every day. It’s a complex, large‑scale project—and an amazing learning opportunity. Watching a design move from paper to construction is extremely rewarding. This project has helped me grow technically and also taught me how to collaborate with multiple teams and clients.

Insights: From engineering school to first engineering job

One thing that truly surprised me during my transition from engineering school to my first engineering role was how little time we actually spend applying pure technical knowledge. At university, we’re taught formulas and theories, but in the real world, it’s equally about coordination, adaptability, and problem‑solving alongside technical skills.

I also realized how vital it is to let go of the pressure to be perfect. In the workplace, it’s our differences—our backgrounds, perspectives, and personalities—that genuinely strengthen teams.

My best advice for engineers starting out

If you’re an engineering student thinking about applying to AtkinsRéalis, don’t be afraid to start networking. Attending career fairs or student conferences is a great way to meet people who work here and understand the company’s culture. Ask questions, be curious, and don’t feel like you need to fit into a mould.

You don’t have to be “perfect” to belong here. Just bring your authentic self—and a willingness to learn.

Planning my future as a process engineer

One day, I’d love to work on developing a new process or product that helps meet essential needs—something related to food or health. Being part of a solution that helps people live better will always make me feel like I’m doing something meaningful. That’s what drives me.
